Katherine Rose Corlew Mathews, age 67 of Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of the late Paul Maynard and Margaret Caldwell Corlew, died Christmas Day 2016 after a very valiant fight against cancer.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home. The Rev. Nick Baird-Chrisohon will officiate. Visitation with Kathy's family will be Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Place of rest will be in the Union Cemetery.

Katherine was born June 6, 1949 in Alabama.  Kathy is a May 1967 graduate of Minor High in Jefferson County, Alabama.  She attended the University of Alabama where she earned a Bachelor of Arts as well as a Masters of Arts.  She taught social studies for more than 30 years in the Jefferson County school system.  Kathy married her husband Tom, a University of Florida graduate, on July 3, 1978.  Tom was a sports writer for nearly 10 years with three newspapers, two in Alabama. He was also director of Public Relations for 21 years and six weeks with a medical center in Bessemer, Alabama.

Kathy always enjoyed returning to Dickson County to visit her parents as well as cousins, nieces and nephews when the opportunity presented itself.  She was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Hoover, AL, where the church is hosting a memorial service for her Sunday, January 14, 2017.

Kathy and Tom were "parents" to nearly a dozen cats and two dogs. While some arrived in good condition, others did not. But not one ever gave an indication of wanting to leave.  For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Birmingham Humane Society.
