 Oscar “Oz” C. Copes, age 68 died suddenly at his home and went to spend eternity with his precious Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 27, 2017.

He is survived by his loving wife, Leslie of 35 years, married October 24, 1981 in Tomahawk, WI. He also leaves behind two brothers, Fred Copes of Stevens Point, WI, and Don (Louise) Copes of Corvallis, Oregon; sister, Sue Copes in addition to numerous nieces and nephews; brother and sisters-in-law, Jim Hill, Debbie Tyler, Tracy Buhler, Jim Keller and Brad & Judy Herman. Also, sadly missed by beloved lab “Cinder” and Ridgeback, “Grace”.

Oz was born August 23, 1948 in Eli, Minnesota to the late Oscar and Lylas Copes. The family moved to Tomahawk, WI where he grew up on Lake Nokomis and the family resort “Copes’ Cottages” where he loved the Great Northwoods and later met his wife, Leslie, “The Love of His Life”.

Oz enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding their horses, trap shooting, where he first met his bride-to-be; the green bay packers, politics and religion, which of course don’t mix, but he made it work. He also loved his extended family at First Baptist Church Dickson, TN where he and Leslie moved for warmer weather and One Last Adventure” in April of 2003, after retiring off the road as a cross country team. Together they owned and operated Grounds for Fun, an espresso, tea and gift shopping in Minocqua, WI. He was a real estate agent for Yeschek in Minocqua. An honest Politician, he served 20 years as a school board member, town chairman, county board supervisor as well as state and governor appointed committees. He served 20 years with the Nokomis Fire Department, a manager at Gary Mathews in Clarkesville, TN; member of the Kiwanis Club, NRA and operated a gunsmith business, “Fired Up!” and was a volunteer tax preparer through United Way.  

A Celebration of Life services for Oz will be conducted at First Baptist Church, Dickson, TN on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 2pm with Dr. Mike Miller, friends and family to celebrate together. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm.

Donations in honor of Oz may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or the Benevolent Fund at First Baptist Church Dickson, 2501 Highway 70 East, Dickson, TN 37055.
