John Bery Hines, Sr, businessman and lifelong resident of Tennessee, died on August 11 after a lengthy illness.  Born in Chapel Hill, TN on July 28, 1936, to Little Bery Hines and Johnette Greene Hines, John lived in Summertown, TN until the age of 10.  John moved to Nashville with his mother, and they settled into family life with his step father Jack Davidson. John attended Peabody Demonstration School where he played baseball, football and basketball, and excelled in track and running.  After attending Vanderbilt University, John worked in sales for Sears Roebuck and E. J. Sains Jewelry.  In 1961, John became a salesman for IBM where he achieved the 100% Club in sales every year, put together the first word processing center in the country at Third National Bank, and installed the first computerized system to track legislation for the state of Tennessee. During his eight years at IBM, he taught sales as a guest instructor for IBM in New York and instructor at the Dale Carnegie Sales School in Nashville.

John left IBM in 1969 and entered the booming food and restaurant business in Nashville.  He took a position as the Director of Franchising for Tex Ritter’s Fast Food Restaurant Chain and simultaneously opened the Stockmarket Restaurant at 325 Union St, Nashville.  He became one of the owners of TGI Fridays and several other restaurants in Nashville.

in 1971 at the cusp of the word processing and personal computer surge, John started a word processing equipment company, CPT of Tennessee, where he sold to banks, law firms, and government offices.  In 1983, John took a position as the National Sales Manager for a movie theatre advertising company and purchased the company, Theatre Advertising Services, in 1987.  He continued in the Video Brochure and Marketing Business until Disney and Warner Brothers prohibited independent advertisers to screen trailers prior to their movies.

John retired to Dickson, TN and attended the First Presbyterian Church, 212 Main Street, Dickson, TN 37055. John enjoyed his old friends and never met a stranger as he always had a handshake, engaging smile, and a story to tell about Nashville and his travels. John loved his family, which includes his wife, Betty “Betsie” Barger-Hines; his daughter, Suzanne Berens, and her husband, Anthony; his son, John Bery Hines, Jr. and his wife, Marianne; his grandson, Nicholas Berens, and his wife Lauren; his granddaughters, Katherine Cecelia Hines and Margaret Anne Hines; and his Great-Grandsons, Mason and Andrew Berens.  John’s outgoing personality and love of life affected everyone he met in a positive way, and he will be greatly missed.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund in his name.
