PREPARED. FOR LIFE.
A celebration of life service for Buford Leslie “Booty” Reed, Jr. will be conducted Friday afternoon, June 14, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Dickson, TN. Rev. Larry Burke, Rev. Steven Lee, Rev. Allen Weller will officiate, and family members will be giving personal reflections.  Place of rest will be in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Taylor Funeral Home on Thursday, June 13th from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  Masonic Services will be Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Christian Life Center, Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Shriner’s Hospital, or the Meals on Wheels Program.

Booty passed away peacefully Sunday, June 9, 2019, at NHC of Dickson, TN.

Booty was born in Nashville, TN on December 17, 1945, to the late Buford Leslie Sr. and Ollie May Reed.  He was a lifelong resident of Dickson County and a 1963 graduate of Dickson High School; he later attended Middle Tennessee State University and Austin Peay State University.

Booty was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Dickson, TN and was a leader in many roles in his church, Pioneer Bible Class, and Men’s Christian Fellowship. He was instrumental in carrying out the White Christmas Food Basket ministry for over 60 years.  He served on 34 overseas Volunteer in Mission teams.  Outside his church, he was involved in our county government serving as a Dickson County Commissioner for 29 years and as Chairman Pro Tem for several years. He served as the Director of the Dickson Housing Authority for 35 years, and he also served as the Housing Authority Director in Waverly, TN.

A passion he had was with the Boy Scouts. For some 30 years, he served on the Executive Committee of the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Over the last 25 years, he served as Achievement chairman mentoring over 400 young men through their Eagle projects. In 2018, he was awarded Scouting’s highest honor, the Good Scout Award, for his community service and leadership. During his life he was involved as a scout and in scouting for over 60 years. He also served his country in the Air National Guard.

Booty was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Dickson Masonic Lodge #468 and former member of the Lions Club serving as President, Region Chair, and Lion of the Year.

Over the years, Booty influenced and touched the lives of thousands of Dickson County citizens in a positive and meaningful way.

Survived by his wife of 49 years, Ernestine Still Reed; daughters, Dr. Leslie Reed Brietenmoser (John) of Cumberland Furnace, TN,  Belinda Powers Byrd (Butch) of Dickson, TN, and son, Dr. Tony Powers (Tracie) of Collierville, TN; five grandsons, Bradley Byrd, Dr. Bryant Byrd (Holly), Dr. Daniel Powers (Ashleigh), Paul Powers (Rebecca), and Johnny Brietenmoser; five great-grandchildren, Cayce Byrd, Sawyer Byrd, Jack Byrd, Estelle Byrd, and Wilhelmina Byrd; his sister, Sue Reed Greer (Travis), his brother, Steve Reed (Janet) along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his infant son, David.
