Mr. Luther, age 86, of Dickson, TN died Wednesday, July 3, 2019  peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family.

Memorials are suggested to Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, Community Foundation, Walnut Street Church of Christ, or Alive Hospice.

John was born in Dickson County, son of the late W.E. and Helen Gonce Luther, and he was the youngest child out of four children.  He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in business. He served his time in the U. S. Army, receiving an Army Reserve Commission, spending time at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Baltimore, MD.  After military service, he was employed in the hotel business in Phoenix, AZ, for several years.  John also worked with Continental Oil Company in Fort Worth, TX, as a district sales rep. In 1960, he returned to Dickson to become a partner with the late Ray and Myra Fielder at the East Hills Restaurant, which became one of John’s most notable ventures. The former restaurant was located on the southeast corner of East College and Mathis Drive, and John purchased it from the Fielders in 1974.

John was a public servant in many manners. He served Dickson County well as a Dickson County Commissioner for some 20 years. He was very active in and was a charter member of the Dickson Rotary Club; he fed the club in the Heritage Room at East Hills Restaurant for many years. He proudly served on the Dickson Electric Service Board of Directors.  John had a passion for history and genealogy, and so, naturally, he served on the board of directors of the Dickson County Historical Society.  He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Horizon Medical Center, and he served on the board of the Dickson County Community Foundation since its founding.

In 1995, John married the former Anita Johnson from Dunlap, TN, and they continued operating the restaurant until it closed in November 1998.  They opened the East Hills Bed and Breakfast Inn in the Luther family home, and they developed the business into a well-known place to stay, where people enjoyed the best of the best in southern hospitality. Part of the charm of the inn was John’s collection of antiques. He loved the vintage beauty of antique furniture and was always looking for a good purchase and classic piece of furniture.

His love of service will never be forgotten, whether it be to his family, cooking up a good meal for someone, providing them a nice place to stay the night, or making county political decisions that affected all citizens of Dickson County.  John always held his Dickson County neighbors in his best interest. John was one of those people that loved people. He always welcomed a conversation with new and old friends. His laugh was contagious and famously recognizable.

John was preceded in death by his grandson, Taylor Terry; his brothers, W. E. Luther, Jr. and Harold Luther; his sister, Rose Luther Martin.

Survivors include wife, Anita Johnson Luther of Dickson, TN; his daughter, Martha Luther Terry and her husband, Mike of Burns, TN; his two grandsons, Gage Terry and Peyton Terry, longtime assistant, Melodie Tipping, and several nieces and nephews.
