Irma Noland Cotton, age 96, of Santa Fe, TN, passed on Monday, March 23, 2020 at NHC Maury in Columbia, TN. Her memorial service has been deferred due to the Corona virus epidemic.

Irma was born on April 1, 1923 and passed just 8 days shy of her 97th birthday. She was raised in Dickson, TN, and was the last remaining child of the late Shirley B. And Olivia Myatt Noland. She was preceded by her husband Robert J. Cotton, brothers Warren and John Billy Noland, and by her sisters Winona Brooks, Oma Vaughn, and Faye McBroom. Irma had recuperated from several previous hospitalizations through sheer tenacity, love of life, will to live, and desire to see positive change in our government.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Cotton of Santa Fe, TN, and Carol Weinberg (James), of Brentwood, TN, grandchildren Benjamin Weinberg and Dr. Rebecca Weinberg, as well as many loving nieces and nephews and oh so many friends and neighbors throughout her 96 years.

Irma met her husband, Robert Cotton, in Smyrna while working on the Army base, and after the war they moved to New York to start his optical business and raise their daughters. With the girls in school, she worked as a bookkeeper and continued doing so (in New York, California, and Dickson) until retirement. Irma and Robert reunited after a 10-year separation, and spent 12 happy years together, active in recovery, until Robert’s death in 1992.  Irma’s interests included cooking, gardening, sewing, traveling, dancing, bridge, crafting, horse racing, gambling (on the Triple Crown as well as in casinos), and the stock market. She was active in various Community Clubs and helped start an investment club. She exercised at the YMCA until it closed, and at Planet Fitness (until a few weeks before her last hospitalization).  Irma was writing her life story, researching ancestry.com, and played Freecell daily - online!

She moved to Santa Fe, TN in 2002, and began a 17-year friendship with Leland Pigg. They were active in the Maury County Democratic Party, and she was named “Democratic Woman of the Year” in 2017. Anybody visiting or calling would find MSNBC playing continuously in the background - Irma was very well-informed politically!

Irma’s mottos: “One day at a time.”, “I love everybody.”, and “Nothing lasts forever.” Irma’s wishes: Justice for all, treat each other as you would wish to be treated, and love one another.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your choice: Maury County Democratic Party or Brightstone in honor of Benny Weinberg.
