Janice, age 73, of Dickson,TN died peacefully December 11, 2020 at her home with her family by her side.

Janice Curd, beloved wife and mother, left this world on December 11, 2020.  She bravely battled stage 4 colon cancer for over two years.  Janice and her devoted husband, Lewis Curd, were quickly approaching their 57th wedding anniversary when she passed away.

Janice was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on January 26, 1947, first child of Joseph Clyde and Dimple Wilkerson Wilson. She attended Norwood Church of Christ with her family, and this is where she met Lewis. She was a star student, an avid swimmer, a basketball player, and along with the rest of her family, an avid fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteer football team.

Janice valued family and children more than anything else, and she dreamed of becoming a mother and a teacher.  She accomplished both of these goals. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Elementary Education, and she achieved this while raising two small children, Allison and Ami.  She then began her teaching career at Burns Elementary School from 1977 to 1979, and then she transferred to Dickson Elementary where she continued to teach 4th grade until health problems caused her early retirement in 1994.  During this time, Janice touched many lives. She provided clothes, glasses, braces, and an untold amount of other needed items for her students.

After retirement, Janice continued to do many other acts of kindness as she was able to do.  She was on the foster care board for Dickson County, and worked with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for many years. She was known to randomly pay for people’s groceries and layaway items for Christmas. She was also known for the many beautiful cards she wrote for birthdays, weddings, sickness, and grieving families. She made precious scrapbooks of pictures for all of her family members as well.

More than anything else, Janice wanted to be a grandmother.  Until her children became parents, she and Lewis were honorary grandparents to many.  They both loved to help young parents by babysitting their children and giving them some needed time off.  Eventually, Janice got plenty of beautiful grandchildren. First, Collins Kruse, son of Blake and Allison Kruse, quickly followed by his twin brothers, Grant and Garrett.  Next, Walker Higgins, son of Chris and Ami Higgins, followed a bit later by Hadley Dean Higgins. Last but not least came Noah Curd, son of Andrew and Joy Curd. Janice loved the annual Thanksgiving photo shoot when she coordinated all the grandchildren for a special Christmas card picture. All of the grandchildren have had lots of quality time with GranJan and PapaLew, and she will not be forgotten.

Janice took time to enjoy herself, too. She loved to late night Amazon shop, and she was often surprised with packages. There was nothing she appreciated more than a day at the beauty shop getting her hair and nails done. She was a voracious reader up until the last month of her life, and we had a hard time keeping her supplied with books.  She enjoyed simple pleasures like adult coloring books, movies, reality television, and homemade sweets. She loved seeing friends and former students on Facebook and keeping in touch with them.

Janice will be missed by many, but especially her family: Her loving husband, Lewis Curd of Dickson, Her daughter Allison (Blake) Kruse of Dickson, her daughter Ami (Chris) Higgins of Somerset, Kentucky, and her son Andrew (Joy) Curd of Cary, North Carolina. Her grandchildren will also miss her: Collins Kruse, Grant Kruse, Garrett Kruse, Walker Higgins, Hadley Dean Higgins, and Noah Curd. Other special relatives include her brother Joe (Glynda) Wilson of Dickson, brother-in-law Dean (Terri) Curd of Sanibel Island, Florida, nieces Melissa (Daniel) O’Connell of Knoxville, and Leigh-Anne Wilson of Brentwood, and nephew Keith Curd of Knoxville and other special cousins and friends.

Donations may be made to Walnut Street church of Christ, Dickson Elementary, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, or do a random act of kindness in her memory. Janice would encourage everyone to get recommended screenings for cancer.

The family would like to thank Caris for their compassion and care for Janice throughout her last days.
