Mr. Smith passed away on December 31, 2013. Robert was born to Jerry “Bill” and Hallie Hayes Smith on June 23, 1923.  Robert was an infantryman in the US Army during World War II, was captured in France, and held as a prisoner of war in Germany for 300 days until he and his work group escaped to Switzerland. Just after the war, he set his sights on a lovely young lady Kathryn Juanita “Nita” Proctor, and they were married September 13, 1947. Robert--always fascinated with airplanes-- worked for AVCO in Nashville and then for Eastern Airlines as a mechanic in Miami, Florida, and as an inspector in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired from Eastern in 1985 and moved to Cocoa, Florida, where he became very active in veteran and ex-POW groups.

Robert is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Nita” Smith of Cocoa, FL; daughter, Gale Wright (C.C.) of Santa Fe, NM; son, Patrick Smith of Titusville, FL; son Stanton Smith (Donna) of Lexington, VA; and grandchildren, Benjamin Adams, Jonathan Adams, Robert A. Smith, and Laura Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha; his parents; and his brother Odell Smith.
