Funeral services for Henry L. Cooksey, age 91, of Dickson were held at 3 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2011 from the Edgewood United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Miller, Rev. George Adair, Rev. Adam Potter, and Rev. Crystal Petty officiating. Interment with National Guard military honors followed in the Cooksey Family Cemetery. His grandsons, Bert Hooper, Adam Potter, Nathan Proctor, J. R. Smith, Christopher Proctor, and J. P. Smith served as pallbearers. Born in Houston County, Henry was the son of the late George Tubb and Mary Eleanor Crouch Cooksey. In the late thirties, shortly before the onset of WWII, Mr. Cooksey served in the Tennessee Army National Guard. Much of his life, he was a self-employed entrepreneur, but earlier in his life he built airplanes with the Vultee Corporation, later known as AVCO. For many years he was owner/operator of Dickson County Memorial Gardens. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and a friend to many. He was a member of Tennessee City Masonic Lodge # 548, FandAM for more than 50 years. Prior to his death on Tuesday, he was the oldest living member of the Edgewood United Methodist Church, having accepted Christ in that congregation at age 12. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Virginia Adams 'Jenny' Cooksey, Dickson; one son, George Cooksey and his wife, Miriam, McEwen, TN; four daughters, Janet Potter and her husband, Bob, Elizabethtown, KY, Gina Evans and her husband, Gregg, Lexington, KY, Kimi Proctor and her husband, Jonathan, McEwen, and Crystal Petty and her husband, Steve, Dickson; brother, Haden Crouch Cooksey, Brentwood, TN; sisters, Margaret Eleanor West, Dickson, and Phoebe Lou Swift, Cheyenne, WY; 18 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, William Andrew Cooksey, George Tubb Cooksey, Jr., Norman Clement Cooksey, and Jesse Rook Cooksey and by a great-granddaughter, Anna Michaela Nenni. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Edgewood United Methodist Church. Arrangements for Mr. Cooksey are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Home.
