    PROVERBS 31:10 WHO CAN FIND A VIRTUOUS WOMAN? FOR HER PRICE IS FAR ABOVE RUBIES. 
  A celebration of her wonder full life will be on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 12 Noon from the Chapel of the Taylor Funeral Home with the Rev Benessa K. Sweat officiating. Place of rest will follow in the Vanleer Cemetery in the  Promise Land Community. Visitation will be Monday evening, May 22nd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
    Miss Essie, one of Dickson County's most beloved residents, age 101, of Charlotte, TN died peacefully May 19, 2017 at NHC of Dickson after a short stay. 
     For those desiring, memorials are suggested to the Promise Land Heritage Association.
   Miss Essie was born in Dickson County  March 29, 1916, eldest child of the of the late Leslie and Mollie Bowen Edmondson.  As a young child, when her parents decided to move to Omaha, Nebraska, little Essie opted to stay in the Promise Land Community with her grandparents George and Farmie Della Bowen. She was educated at the historic Promise Land School. At the age of 17 she married Robert Gilbert a young man who was also deeply rooted in the community. Together they begin a life parenting eight children.  She was a lifefong resident of our county and was a Mother and Homemaker and the widow of the late Mr. Robert James Gilbert who died in 1984.  She was active in the affairs of the Promise Land Heritage Association for many years. Miss Essie professed her faith at an early age.  She was a life member of the St. John Methodist Church known today as the  Promise Land Church. She proudly served for many years as Sunday School Superintendent, worked with the Women Society of Christian Services and later the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Gilbert was a founding member of the Promise Land Community Club.  As a founding member of the PLCC and the Dickson County Historical Society, she was the driving force to secure a State Marker for the Promise Land Historic Site.She volunteered for years as a Gray Lady at the former Goodlark Hospital. She was slso a member of the National Federation of Colored Women, the NAACP and the Ole Ship of Zion Singing Group.
    Survivors include her children: Joseph Clay Gilbert of Charlotte, TN, William L. Gilbert of Charlotte,TN, Beverly Gilbert Williams and her husband, Hyburnia of Clarksville,TN, Della Bryant of Lake Spivey, Ga., Serina K. Gilbert of Charlotte,TN, Linda G. Watson and her husband Kenneth of Charlotte,TN, 16 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren. A very devoted first cousin, Carrie Woods, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, including two devoted friends, Mrs. Eudora Harmon and Mrs. Nella Mae Nesbitt. She was preceded in death by two children, Bobbie Beasly and Rita Gilbert, grandson Clay and sons-in-law, Ronald Beasly and Walter Bryant, sisters Robie Beason and Sarah Nelson and brother Stanley Edmondson.
