Graveside funeral services for the family and close friends of Madeline S. Hickerson, age 100, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2020 from Charlotte Cemetery with Bobby Speight officiating.  There will be a brief viewing at Taylor Funeral Home at 10 a.m. prior to the service.  The family suggests memorials to Charlotte Cemetery, c/o Judy Bone, P. O. Box 74, Charlotte, TN  37036, or to Charlotte Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  For those attending, please observe the wearing of a facial covering and the practice of social distancing.

Born in Lincoln County, Tennessee Mrs. Hickerson was the daughter of the late Lila and Mamie Jones Sisco.  In her early life, her family raised cotton.  Madeline’s zeal was demonstrated by picking 285 pounds of cotton in one day.  After that, her sisters did not like to “pick” with her because she would show them up in the field!  She married Ward Hickerson, who predeceased her in 1984.  She graduated from Austin Peay State College and taught at Charlotte High School and Charlotte Jr. High for 30 years.  Mrs. Hickerson was a member of Charlotte Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Missionary Society.

She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed sewing and quilting.  Ever prepared, Mrs. Hickerson sewed her own burial garment and kept it stored “for this occasion.”  She also enjoyed her outdoor work which included manicuring her lawn and tending to her flowers and gardening.  She enjoyed a special relationship with her students, and they looked forward to Halloween and flocking to her home for the purpose of “rolling her yard.”  They knew she would be prepared for this and that she would meet them with a forceful garden hose to “dampen” their plans but not their spirit!  They remember her as one who was always fair in her judgement but tempered with high expectations of them.   When the Titans came to Tennessee, she became an avid fan and watched and critiqued their coaches and players intensely.  She was frank and honest and “told it like it was.”  She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Her survivors include her daughter, Emily Hickerson Boyd; her step-grandson, Charlton Boyd; her sister, Emogene Hopkins; and several nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of Brookdale Clarksville and Tennessee Quality Care for their excellent care and for being her special family for the last few months.
