Thomas A. (Tom) Mayo died peacefully January 20, 2024 at Horizon Medical Center in Dickson after a ten year battle with cancer.  He was born March 1, 1945 in Nashville, TN to Thomas Hardison and Norah Virginia Hall Mayo.  He grew up in West Nashville and graduated from Bellevue High School.  He received a B.S. in Education from Tennessee Tech and later earned a master’s in education from Austin Peay.  Tom and Kitty moved to Charlotte, TN in 1973.  Tom loved his church family at Charlotte Fagan Community Church and was a faithful member.

He spent forty-three years as an educator, and he loved teaching.  He enjoyed his many students during that time, and he was especially enthusiastic about introducing them to William Shakespeare’s plays.

Tom and his wife Kitty owned and operated Volume One Book Shop on Main Street in Dickson for over thirty years.  Tom enjoyed the wonderful customers they had.

He was an avid golfer during his spare time.  He was the Grillmaster, with three grills and a collection of grilling cookbooks.  His family was important to him, and he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his four grandchildren.

He fought the good fight, but now

“Good night sweet Prince and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest” (Hamlet Act 5, Scene 2)

He is survived by wife, Kitty; son, Adam Mayo (Sarah); grandchildren, Addison, Abigail, Audrey, and Aiden Mayo; sister, Janice Frakes; brothers, Mike (Frances) and Steve Mayo; several nieces and nephews.  His brother Carl preceded him in death.

Tom’s wishes were to be cremated.  There will be no formal service at this time.
