Mrs. Sloan was born in Dickson, TN on October 25, 1936. She was one of ten children of the late Claggett and Helen Mae Castell Talley. Marian spent her early years in Hohenwald, TN. The Talley’s were a tight knit family. In adulthood, those siblings would vacation together and organize family Christmas events, often reaching over 100 in attendance.
For a while, Marian worked at the General Shoe factory in Hohenwald. On Nov. 15, 1956, she married James Lloyd Sloan, Jr., it was the beginning of a rich and meaningful relationship, full of adventure. Mr. Sloan had a hobby and love of antique cars and flying. They would travel all over the country together locating parts for his 1925 Chevrolet. Often Marian would have to retrieve James and his ultralight aircraft from an unplanned landing site. Marian worked as an auditor for the Tennessee Department of Revenue for 14 years. She retired in 1986, shifting her focus to grandparenting. In truth, being a grandmother became her full-time occupation. Being a grandparent was much like her marriage and her faith in God; she was completely committed and involved. Mr. Sloan often affectionately referred to Marian as “kiddo,” living out her second childhood. You see, Marian wasn’t a spectator, she participated in whatever the grandkids were doing. Whether the activity was swimming, jumping on a trampoline, playing kickball or hurling dodgeballs, she was at the heart of the action and playing to win. Her life is proof that she loved being around children. For many years she served with the nursery at church and participated in the Good News Club, which was an after-school church ministry. Marian loved and cherished her Harpeth Baptist Church family.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Margurite Bullion, Wanda Epley, Dewayne Talley, Charles Talley, Don Talley, Brenda Helentjaris, and Peggy Potts.
Mrs. Sloan is survived by three daughters, Cindy Sloan, Teresa Liles (Hillard), and Jimmie Kaye Street (Tim). She was a devoted grandmother of Lacey Steverson, Adam Liles, Matt Street, Hillary Tompkins (Chris), Cody Street (Grace) and Colton Greer (Ali); and great grandmother to Hunter Tompkins, Destiny Tompkins, Ethan Tompkins, Marlie Liles, Samantha Queen, Antony Felipe, Colby Street, Dylan Street, Mayumi Street, and Rowan Greer. Also surviving are siblings, Fred Talley (Karen) and Carmie Floyd (Jerry) and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to recognize and thank Alive Hospice, Cassidy, Evelyn, and Cindie who became a loving part of their family.
