Born in Dickson County, Buford was the son of the late Zollie Clinton Yates and the late Lou Dora Donegan Yates. He served his country in the United States Army and was retired after 28 years from the former Red Kap Industries, where he worked as a machine mechanic. He was a member of Pomona Baptist Church. Buford was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Annetta Johnson Dean Yates, brothers, Paul C. Yates and Robert J. Yates and several aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his son, Terry W. Yates, Burns; his daughter, Debbie Daugherty (James), Burns; grandsons, Brandon Daugherty and Brian Daugherty; great-granddaughter, Alexis Cheyanne Daugherty; several nieces and nephews; and his great companion, Jacob Fennell.
