Doris M. Taylor, [84], passed away on December 5, 2024, in Dickson, Tennessee, at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on September 22, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Doris is survived by her daughter, Kim Avington; son, Dwayne Avington; three grandchildren, Whitney (Rob) Wagner, Courtney Scott, and William Scott, Jr.; and her cherished great-granddaughter, Sofia. She was also a loving "Nana" to countless others she welcomed into her life as family. She was preceded in death by her father, Shelby Morgan, her mother, Doris Lyles Hill, her stepfather, George Washington Hill, and her brother, Rodney (Rod) Watkins.
Doris dedicated her life to education and teaching in Indiana and the Davidson County Metropolitan Schools system. She was particularly passionate about advocating for children with special needs, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, their families, and her colleagues. She continued to share her passion for helping others long after she retired from teaching.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Doris found joy in knitting, sewing, and quilting, all hobbies she lovingly shared with friends and family. She was an active member of Compassion Church in Dickson, Tennessee, where she was deeply involved in serving the church and its community.
Doris will be remembered for her boundless kindness, sharp wit, and unwavering commitment to serving others. Doris offered compassion without judgment to those who were often in the most need. She was beloved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
