Bereavement Counseling

We extend to our families and community our support with a continuing program to help our friends deal with their loss. Grief can be very painful and can be very difficult to deal with, and therefore, we feel the need to offer grief materials and support activities.

Mary Simmons is our Bereavement Facilitator. Mary is a Professional School Counselor with 45 years experience working with children and families in the Dickson County and the Nashville area. Mary worked in Dickson County as an elementary teacher and school counselor and during her time in Dickson County worked in all seven elementary schools and Sullivan Middle School. She also served as the Director of School Counseling Services for theTennessee Department of Education for ten years and ended her professional educational career as a counselor at Currey Ingram Academy, a school for exceptional children, in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Mary is a graduate of Austin Peay State University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in School Counseling and Guidance. Mary has also completed doctoral level courses in Counseling and Guidance at Tennessee State University. She and her husband, Jim, are the parents of two daughters and five granddaughters. She is an active volunteer in the Dickson County Community and the First United Methodist Church.

As a school counselor Mary conducted support groups for children and teens on many areas of loss including death of parents, siblings and family members, divorce, trauma and teen suicide. Mary also worked with parents of children with learning challenges to help them better understand and accept their child's strengths and challenges.

Loss is a part of everyone's life and each person reacts to this loss in their own unique way. However, we live in a world where people are expected to "get-over" their loss quickly and this is not realistic. Mary believes that Grief Support Programs help those experiencing loss to normalize the grief journey and that through sharing their personal stories of loss group members help one another to understand and accept their loss and find hope for the future.

Our support groups are ongoing and open to all who wish to attend. Taylor Funeral Home provides the support program for all in the community who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The groups are held in the Chapel Room of the Dickson YMCA on Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:30 a.m. You may contact Mary at 615-330-3724 or Peggy at Taylor Funeral Home at 615-446-2808 for dates and times. Information about the Grief Support Group will also be published in The Dickson Post and announced on WDCN radio.
